What is the SPEED Project and Why is it Important?
The SPEED project (Sport for Prevention of Eating and Eating Behavior Disorders) aims to use sport as a tool for preventing eating disorders and unhealthy eating habits among children and adolescents aged 9 to 14. Today, children are increasingly exposed to pressure around appearance and unrealistic beauty ideals promoted by media and social networks, which can negatively affect their mental health, self-esteem, and overall well-being. The SPEED project seeks to address these issues early on, in a sensitive and comprehensive way.
By involving coaches, teachers, parents, and children themselves, SPEED focuses on promoting healthy body image, a positive relationship with physical activity, nutrition, and personal development. The first phase includes research in six partner countries to better understand the current situation and the perspectives of children, parents, and coaches. Based on the results, educational materials such as videos, podcasts, a short handbook, and a multilingual web platform will be created for training and awareness.
Trainers and teachers will receive special training to help children understand that every body is different – and that diversity in body shapes and structures is natural and valuable. Emphasis will be placed on healthy habits, balanced nutrition, and critical thinking toward unrealistic beauty standards in media. The project will also offer workshops with psychologists and nutritionists to support both children and parents in creating a healthy and safe environment in sports and school settings.
The SPEED project will directly impact over 2,000 people – including 500 children, 500 parents, 500 athletes, and 500 coaches across six different European countries. We believe that if children learn that a person’s value does not depend on their weight or looks, but on health, character, and joy from movement, we can work together to prevent many serious problems before they even begin.
